IATH Fellowships
Faculty Fellowships at The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities
The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities was established in 1992 to provide researchers in the arts and humanities with an opportunity to employ sophisticated technical support and advanced computer technology in the service of their scholarship. The Institute encourages collaborative research proposals from humanists on the internet, and it can offer creative technologists a broad range of research needs and opportunities. The Institute's Fellowships are open-ended, continuing until the termination of the research for which they are awarded, but in all cases the Institute's technical consulting is intended to be concentrated in the first year, with the projects becoming more or less self-sufficient after that time.
Call for Proposals
The mission of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH) is to explore and expand the potential of information technology as a tool for humanities research. To that end, we offer a Fellowship Program to UVA faculty whose scholarship would be enhanced through use of computers for analysis, interpretation, modeling and other research activities. Fellows are provided with consulting, technical support, applications programming, and networked publishing facilities.
Eligibility
Faculty members involved in humanities research through any department of the University are eligible to apply for fellowships. We interpret “humanities” very broadly, as can be seen from the spectrum of disciplines represented in past projects, including Anthropology, Architecture, Art History, Engineering Humanities, English, History, Landscape Architecture, Music, and Religious Studies. Links to specific projects can be accessed at: http://www.iath.virginia.edu/researchactive.html.
Fellowship Support
One Residential Fellowship will be awarded. This fellowship is for a two-year period and will include: half-time teaching release in the first year, office space at the Institute, equipment and software, training, computer programming, budget resources, research assistants, and development assistance to raise additional grants and gifts to support the research project. The selection committee may also choose a second applicant to receive an Associate Fellowship. The Associate Fellowship lasts one academic year, and includes consulting services on project design and technical issues, equipment loans, and development assistance.
Deadline for fellowships in the 2005 academic year are due by February 28, 2005
Decisions of the selection committee will be made by the end of March, and fellowships will begin July 1, 2005 . Those planning to submit an application are invited to discuss their proposals in advance of the deadline; please contact Joy Shifflette at (434) 924-4527 to schedule an appointment.
