Conference Excursions & Banquet

Two excursions are planned:

The first excursion will take participants tubing on the James River (Cost: $25). At the end of this excursion, there will be an optional dinner at the historic Michie Tavern (Cost: $25).

The second excursion will take participants to tour the homes and grounds of two American presidents--Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, and Ash Lawn, home of James Monroe (Cost: $25).

There will also be a banquet on the evening of Saturday the 12th of June, including live entertainment from a Piedmont blues guitarist, John Jackson (Cost: $35). For a sample of Jackson's music, try either the 28K or the 56K RealAudio recordings of "Going Down in Georgia on a Horn (© Tradition Music Co., published by permission): if you need a realaudio player, you can get that here. According to Chuck Perdue's liner notes, "on a horn" is a variant of "on the hog," a hobo expression from the 1930s meaning "in a bad way financially"--so this seemed an appropriate selection for humanities computing types. Jackson received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986.

Other Opportunities:

Charlottesville is located near the James River and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Other recreational opportunities include a number of local vineyards, rafting, hot-air ballooning, horseback riding, and a lively local music scene. The University offers exhibits at the Bayly Museum, Book Arts Press, and the Library's Special Collections, and Charlottesville has excellent movie houses, wine shops, antiquarian book stores, and antique shops.
