Auschwitz was the first Nazi concentration camp in occupied Poland. S.S. Hauptsturmführer Rudolf Höss visited Auschwitz on April 18-20, 1940, and was ordered to submit a report on the feasibility of transforming an already existing barracks into a concentration camp. On April 27, 1940, Reichsführer S.S. Heinrich Himmler ordered the construction of a concentration camp in Auschwitz.
