The Geography of Augusta and Staunton

The lithograph of Staunton in the late 1850s offers a fascinating and detailed look at the small city. Thanks to the Historic Staunton Foundation, you are able to click on twenty-two houses and buildings in 1857 Staunton and see them in close-up photographs. You may also read about the buildings and their histories in greater detail. To see the ad for the original lithograph, click here.

The street map of Staunton comes from the early 1870s, drawn by the famous local cartographer, Jedediah Hotchkiss--"mapmaker to the Confederacy." We are currently developing that map so it can be linked with the information in the tax records, census, newspapers, historic preservation records, and other sources. The other maps are also from the period after the Civil War. They offer an extremely detailed portrayal of the farms and plantations of Augusta County-- and who lived in its many smaller towns and villages. To see a larger version of these maps, click here..
