  Thomas Cogswell Upham was a professor of "Mental and Moral Philosophy" at Bowdoin college, and a prolific writer on religious subjects. Stowe met him soon after she moved with her husband to Brunswick, and called his home "delightful": "a beautiful pattern of a Christian family, a beautiful exemplification of religion."*
