American Reviews of Uncle Tom's Cabin

The London Times is obviously not an American paper, but its review of Uncle Tom's Cabin is included here because it was so widely reprinted and referred to in the American press. The version here is digitized from The New York Times, and it was even printed separately as a pamphlet (see image left). As a group the reviewers are unfavorable or full of reservations, generally more alarmed than enthusiastic. The review George Graham wrote for his magazine has its own story; at least Graham himself later said that it was "fatal" to his periodical, that subscriptions to Graham's Magazine declined sharply because of his hostility to Stowe's novel.
