Information on #GradStudentTax

December 5, 2017

The National Humanities Alliance (NHA), a nonprofit and nonpartisan advocacy coalition that promotes the advancement of humanities education, research, preservation, and public programs, has posted information about current actions in the U.S. Congress that will affect funding of U.S. graduate students. In particular, one part of the U.S. House of Representative's version of a revised tax plan would subject graduate student tuition waivers to income tax, dramatically raising tax bills for a large percentage of students. The NHA has posted links to contact members of the Senate and House, as well as links to read more about this issue. NHA suggests calling and emailing members of congress as soon as possible.

The Chronicle of Higher Education also has an analysis of the effect of the proposed House and Senate bills on higher education, in terms of tuition and funding.
